It has been a while since I had the chance to get out and network with other fellow business owners. I met some really interesting people while making my rounds at the Small Business Expo @ Navy Pier. I have been to a lot of trade shows and expos and I have to say, this one was well put together. I really like the area where you could display your business cards for everyone to see. If you see a service you like pull the card from the display and save the contacting that person later. As I walk into the expo I was greeted by a gentleman that asked me if I would like to fill out a from to have a free 30 min counseling session to have my business evaluated. I said yes and filled the form out. After I finish filling the form out I was told to go over to the booth and get a time slot for my counseling session. I tried a few times to get my time slot but the booth was always crowded. That being said I didn’t get a chance to get my business evaluated. Better luck next time. I decided to walk the entire show floor before I committed to doing anything. I just knew I wanted to check out a few workshops, maybe I could learn something new. After I walked the around for a while I decided to try Speed Networking. When I first walked in it reminded me of speed dating. Not that I’ve ever tried it but for some reason it reminded me of it. I said hello to the hostess who was very polite and she told me I could sit with the lady with the funny looking jacket on. I found Speed Networking to be very productive. How it works is the people against the stay put and the people sitting in front of them rotate to the right every three minutes. Some people in the session could not grasp that concept. Once they hit the super loud gong (it scared this one guy half to death) you have 90 seconds to explain your company to the person sitting across from you. After you are doing then the other person talks about what their company does. You then exchange business cards and move to the next person to the right. I meet a few contacts that I will be touching basis with on Monday to conduct some new business. I meet around 15 new people during the 30 minute Session. It was overall a good experience. I also took a few photos along the way.
